From the 1.1 version Colorate has a custom HEX color picker inside the Application bundle, but under some circumstances it doesn’t load as it should (on Mac OS X 10.4). There are two ways to fix the problem: manually, moving some files from the application bundle to the /Library/ColorPickers folder of the system, or downoading and executing an installer from this webpage.

Manually:

  1. 1.Clic over the Colorate icon while holding down the CTRL key, and select the Show Contents from Package option from the contextual menu.

  2. 2.Navigate to the Contents > Resources > ColorPickers folder and move the ColoratePicker.colorPicker folder to the ~/Library/ColorPickers folder or /Library/ColorPickers folder.

Installer:

  1. 1.Download Colorate ColorPicker.zip.

  2. 2.Once downloaded, uncompress the .zip file and double clic the Colorate ColorPicker installer file.

  3. 3.Follow the onscreen instructions from the installer.

  4. 4.The next time you use Colorate you will be able to use the ColoratePicker from the standard Color Panel.

What is a Color Picker?

Mac OS X includes the Color Panel for color selection from Cocoa applications (that is, the most part of the current applications running on Mac OS X).

By default, the Color Panel includes five ways for selecting the desired color: Color Wheel; RGB, Gray, CMYK and HSB sliders; Color Palettes; Image Palettes and Crayons. These are known as Color Pickers.

Apple provides to developers the way for creating new Color Pickers that you can use from a particular application or from any one of the applications installed on your hard disk; some of those are free (as the one bundled with Colorate), while others are shareware or commercial.

How to use the Colorate Color Picker?

The Colorate Color Picker main purpose is showing the hex value of the sample color clicked on the main window, but you also can use it to see any other hexadecimal color value.

First of all you have to access the Color Panel window clicking over the Colors button from the Colorate main window or directly clicking over any color sample.

With the Color Panel visible, click over the second button from the right to access the Colorate Color Picker. Then you will be able to move the RGB slides to change the sample color. The value field will change accordingly for showing the hexadecimal color value.

For copying such value, click over the value field, select all the text and use the Command + C keyboard shortcut.

Did you know...

  1. Color Picker and ColorSync. Some Color Pickers allow choosing a ColorSync profile in order to map the selected color to that to be reproduced in a particular device. You can use this feature from any of the color pickers accesible down the Color Sliders option.

  2. Adobe Photoshop Color Selection. You can use the standard Mac OS X Color Picker in Adobe Photoshop. All you need to do is select the Apple option on the Color Picker popup from the General preferences in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements. This way you will be able to use the palettes generated and saved from Colorate.
